The educational metaverse refers to a three-dimensional virtual environment in which students and educators interact and engage in immersive educational experiences. It is an extension of the concept of the metaverse, which is defined as a shared and ever-evolving virtual universe accessible through digital devices.

In the educational metaverse, students can immerse themselves in virtual environments that recreate real or imaginary places, offering highly interactive and engaging learning experiences. These virtual environments can be designed to simulate real-life situations, allowing students to experience and apply theoretical concepts in practical contexts.

The central idea of the educational metaverse is to provide students with a more immersive and participatory way of learning that goes beyond the limitations of traditional classroom-based learning. Through the use of avatars, which are digital representations of students, they can interact with the virtual environment and other participants, collaborate on projects, conduct experiments, solve problems, and explore concepts in a hands-on manner. One key advantage of the educational metaverse is its ability to overcome geographical barriers and provide global access to education. Students from different parts of the world can connect and learn together in the metaverse, sharing experiences and knowledge regardless of their physical location.

Education through the metaverse can be seen as an evolution of virtual learning or eLearning, as both concepts share a focus on delivering educational experiences in a virtual space. Metaverse education platforms are designed to provide these immersive opportunities. Additionaly, the metaverse will have a greater impact in the field of education and virtual training (63%), entertainment (61%), video games (57%), work meetings (55%), and socializing and health-related resources (both at 54%), according to a study conducted by Ipsos and the World Economic Forum in 29 countries.
